In 2025, Dmitry Talantov - a well-known Russian lawyer, the first president of the Bar Association of the Udmurt Republic, Chairman of the Board of the Interregional Public Organization of Lawyers and Jurists «Initiative 2018», wrongfully convicted to deprivation of liberty for anti-war statements in social networks, a political prisoner and prisoner of conscience[1] became the laureate of the Ludovic Trarieux International Human Rights Prize[2].
At present, Dmitry Talantov is in custody.
On November 13, 2025, the Ludovic Trarieux International Human Rights Prize was presented to the wife of Dmitry Talantov, lawyer Olga Talantova.
The Ludovic Trarieux International Human Rights Prize was established in Bordeaux (France) in 1984 by French lawyer Bertrand Favreau to encourage lawyers of any nationality whose work contributes to the protection of human rights, the rule of law, or the fight against intolerance and racism. An authoritative international jury awards the prize to lawyers who have dedicated their careers to the protection of human rights and the struggle for the rule of law. The prize is awarded after consultations with international non-governmental and humanitarian organizations.
The prize was established in honor of French lawyer Ludovic Trarieux, who founded the League for Human Rights during the height of the Dreyfus Affair - a scandalous trial that became a symbol of antisemitism and judicial errors in France.
Since 2003, the prize has been awarded jointly by several organizations: the Human Rights Institute of the Bordeaux Bar Association, the Human Rights Institute of the Paris Bar Association, the Human Rights Institute of the Brussels Bar Association, the Union of Lawyers for the Defense of Human Rights (Rome), the Amsterdam, Geneva, and Luxembourg Bar Associations, the Berlin Bar Association, the International Union of Lawyers (UIA), and the European Institute of Human Rights Lawyers (IDHAE).
The first laureate of the prize was the fighter against apartheid in South Africa, Nelson Mandela. In different years, the prize has been awarded to Iranian lawyer Nasrin Sotoudeh, Afghan human rights defender Freshta Karim, Turkish lawyers Ebru and Barkın Timtik, Belarusian lawyer Yulia Yurgilevich, and Russian lawyer Karinna Moskalenko.
Since 2016, the jury has annually awarded the «Special Mention of the Jury» to a bar association that, through its actions, work, or sufferings, has demonstrated activities in the protection of human rights. In 2025, the «Special Mention of the Jury» was awarded to the Istanbul Bar Association.
